Eco-tourism
Festival visitors have many choices for combining an eco-tourism holiday with the Guyana Jazz Festival™. Tourism in Guyana is an alternative to the "sun, sea and sand" holidays of the nearby Caribbean islands. With its rich natural life, many nature and eco-tourism ventures have grown up, built on the sandy banks of interior rivers and islands and along cola-coloured creeks and rivers — they get their colour from fallen leaves and vegetation upstream.
The best-known attraction is Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's greatest waterfalls and among the highest single-drop falls on earth. Visitors also come for the largely untouched forests and rich wildlife — and for the country's mix of cultures and warm, hospitable people.
With most of the country under forest, much of it virgin, Guyana stands apart from other eco-tourism destinations. Much of its flora and fauna is thriving, though some species are sadly endangered. Guyana is a haven for sea turtles, and Shell Beach is one of their prime nesting spots — the Shell Beach conservation work involves local Indigenous communities in protecting them.
Many hope eco-tourism will offer an alternative to more extractive uses of the land such as logging and mining. When local people and businesses depend on a healthy environment, they have every reason to protect it — and eco-tourism also respects the culture and well-being of Indigenous communities.
